Catholic Moral Thought
(Religious Studies 276)

UPEI  Main Building 020
May 13 – June 19, Tue &Thur, 6 pm – 8:50 p.m.

This course is a study of historic and contemporary representatives of Catholic moral teaching.  It  begins by considering the moral philosophy and theology of Catholicism's greatest medieval thinker, St. Thomas Aquinas. It carefully considers his discussions of crucial questions such as happiness, freedom, human nature, conscience, natural law and sin. It then proceeds to study a contemporary approach to these same issues found in Pope John Paul II's famous encyclical, The Splendor of Truth. The course concludes by considering some contemporary applications of Catholic moral thought in the field of biomedical ethics.

The primary goal of this course is that students become familiar with the Roman Catholic approach to morality and the application of that approach to certain questions of contemporary relevance. By the end of the semester, students should be able to think and speak intelligently about the primary issues at stake when it comes to Catholic ethics, to understand the logic of philosophical and theological Catholic arguments on ethical issues, and to see how Catholic Church teaching is rooted in a broader world view embracing the nature of the human person, the goal of human life, and the place of human beings in the cosmos and in relation to God. The goal of this course is not to convince people to agree with the Catholic Church's teaching, but to understand the nuances of the positions the Church takes and to appreciate the ways in which Catholics address the most powerful objections to these positions.   RS 276 may be taken for credit or audit.
