Information about Formation At a Diocesan Consultation in 1999, the following was expressed as an urgent need: "Catechist Formation: a program (process) for catechists of all levels (adults, youth, children) that will be accessible to all areas within our Diocese, based on and inspired by The General Directory for Catechesis.(GDC)" The Office of Religious Education is pleased to report that in response to this expressed need, such a program (resource) is now complete and available for use in our parishes. This resource, Module One of the Atlantic Catechist Formation Initiative, Christian Community and Catechesis, has been developed by the Atlantic Catechetical Association in collaboration with the Atlantic Episcopal Assembly. The resource is packaged on a CD which can be copied and used in each parish with the local facilitator who can be introduced to the resource and provided with any support required. Pastoral re-structuring can be simple if we, the people of the Church, can share the vision of who we are as Church, as presented in the GDC and shared in this resource. Catechists are not just those who meet with the children in "groups" for teaching of our faith. Catechesis is needed in many aspects of our parish life if we intend to "keep the Church alive" in our communities whatever their boundaries or whatever the leadership within those communities. Bishops, priests, parents, consecrated religious and all lay people are called to take responsibility for catechesis. Some are called specifically to be catechetical leaders, but all are called to be informed and involved in catechesis, an essential element in the Church's only mission which is to evangelize. We need to understand this process before we can have much success in achieving it. Christian Community and Catechesis provides an opportunity for us all to share Jesus's vision of bringing about the Kingdom of God.
