Our Diocese in Action!

Mass of Chrism

Sacred oils are used throughout the year for anointing at Baptisms, Confirmations, Ordinations, and celebrations of the Sacrament of the Sick or the Dying. These oils are consecrated by the Diocesan Bishop at the Mass of Chrism during Holy Week each year.  The Mass of Chrism gathers the faithful of the Diocese at their mother church with their shepherd and highlights the union of his ministry with the faithful. His ministry is symbolically present when the oils are used in parishes. At the Mass of Chrism the clergy of the diocese are also invited to renew their commitment of service and to receive the prayers and support of the people.  The three oils are the oil of the catechumens used in preparation for Baptism as a sign of strengthening and for protection, the oil of Chrism used as a sign of being sealed and set aside for a specific task or ministry, and the oil of the Sick for healing and restoring.
The Mass of Chrism will be celebrated at St. Dunstan's Basilica on Monday, March 17, at 7:00 p.m.  Everyone is welcome!
