Our Diocese in Action!

For Your Consideration...

Are Christians Willing to Reclaim the Sabbath?

Will Christians dare to reclaim Sunday as a day of rest and a day to keep holy? Christians may have unconsciously allowed work and sports to usurp this day and maybe it is time to be more proactive in reclaiming it.  Christian families can say no to sports associations and teams who schedule practices, games, and tournaments at times that have traditionally been for Christian community worship, activities such as catechesis, and family bonding time.

How are we  involving youth in our Church?

The fifty days of Easter has been a time of great rejoicing as we have been  immersed in the glorified life of the risen Jesus. From April 3rd until May 25th , Bishop Fougere and parishes celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with hundreds of adolescents throughout this Diocese.

We often lament an ongoing reality that many confirmed adolescents often lose the commitment to participate in further catechesis and even in the Sunday liturgy.  This points to the need for youth ministry whereby the local Church in some form reaches out to include these young people in activities which help the youth maintain an identity with the Church and actively seek out opportunities  to "assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the ecclesial community and in temporal affairs." (CCC#1319) In other words we want to continue to provide real opportunities for the young to be conscious of the presence of the Spirit in their lives.

To provide youth ministry, parish leaders and the whole Church must be willing to ask a few pertinent questions:

  • What resources are available for youth ministry?

  • Who have the gifts for leadership in youth ministry?

  • How does  youth ministry fit with whole parish ministry?

  • How do we measure the success of youth ministry?

  • What events can parishes offer to invite and encourage  youth to share their time and talents in the church?
