This is Our Faith! The Church Celebrates in May This year May is a time of great celebration within our Catholic faith. On May 4, we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, when we recall how the resurrected Jesus guided his beloved disciples as high as they can go up a mountain where he passed on his mission to them, and then himself went on upwards into heaven. Why stand looking upward when we have a mission to accomplish? On May 11, we celebrate Pentecost. Jesus knew it would take a lot of courage to carry on such a mission. The new "Body of Christ" would need Spirit to continue, and as promised the Spirit of God is given in abundance. Wondrous gifts given so the disciples can share all they had seen and heard. On May 18, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The circle of love is complete. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit united in a single act of sharing peace and love for all humanity. On May 25, we celebrate the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. God's saving action was through the human birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus, which all remains present to us through the gift of the Eucharist which is especially honoured on this feast. We become the "Body of Christ" for Christ today, by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. In May, of course, we also celebrate Mother's Day when we honour all women who mother in many ways. Mothering has been referred to as loving a being into life. Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers! In May we traditionally celebrate various devotions to Mary our Mother who was given as our mother by Jesus himself on the cross. Mary accompanied Jesus throughout his human life and, as expressed in our belief in the Assumption, remains in the presence of Jesus and maintains a mother's love for us as we continue Jesus' mission.
