A-2-09 CELEBRATING THE SEASONS OF ADVENT AND  LENT
(also L-1-29)   DVD video 2008    Grades 3-8    15 minutes & 18 minutes

ADVENT: CELEBRATING THE SEASON (A-2-09)  The season of Advent begins a new Church year.  During the preparation time of Advent, we are invited to change and grow more like Jesus.  During these four weeks, we prepare for Jesus' coming in our daily lives as we wait together for the fullness of light to come into our world at Christmas.

The custom of the Advent wreath is the focus of this program.  In the light of the Advent wreath, we remember, live and hope for the one who has already come.  We warm our hearts to live justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with God.  The simple Advent wreath tells the story of a people yesterday and today who yearn for more light in their life.

This program also includes other Advent activities and traditions such as the Jesse Tree, an Advent Friend, Straw for a Crib, and an Advent House to help young people appreciate the spiritual dimension of the Advent and Christmas season.

LENT: CELEBRATING THE SEASON (L-1-29) We begin our journey through the season of Lent by being marked with ashes in the sign of the Cross  on our forehead with these words: "Keep Lent and turn to God with all your heart."

The program explores customs, traditions, prayers and ways we keep Lent as we walk together on the path to Jerusalem, preparing for the new life of Easter.  During these forty days, we pray, we fast, we do good works, we remember.

We are invited to deepen our understanding of Lent as a time to turn to God and to look at Jesus and the way he lived his life.  This program challenges us to speak of Jesus in our lives today.  As we choose ways to become more like Jesus, we continue our walk with others through these days of Lent, the events of Holy Week into the Easter Resurrection.                - Franciscan Communications

Part 2 - The Mystery of God   35 min. - 1996 - Adults     The first concern here is to better understand and teach the Mystery of God through the use of "caring parent" and other images.  Then we deal with the perennial question of providence, or "why bad things happen to good people."  Finally, we look at God as Creator, especially considering the implications this teaching has for environmental concerns.   -Brennan Hill & William Madges

C-1-05   Enriching The Catechist - Part 3 and Part 4  33 min. - 1996 - Adults    Part 3 - Jesus Christ: Human and Divine     In this session, we explain and discuss how to effectively teach significant areas of doctrine.  First, we consider the humanity of Jesus, and consider him as a person who lived a full human life; a man who was a great teacher and friend.  Secondly, we examine the divinity of Jesus, and discuss post-resurrection faith in Jesus as Son of God, Messiah and Savior.  Finally, we look at how Jesus was a great teacher of prayer.   -Brennan Hill & William Madges
Part 4 - The Church: Gathering of God's People    37 min. - 1996 - Adults     Here we deal with how Jesus was a Jewish reformer who laid the foundations for the Christian church.  We look at his call to conversion, his call to ministry, and how after the resurrection, the church came upon the scene.  A second area we treat, both theologically and in terms of practical catechetics, is the reform of the Second Vatican Council, where the church was described as a community of equals.  Finally, we discuss the church's mission of service to the modern world.   -Brennan Hill & William Madges

C-1-06   Enriching The Catechist - Part 5 and Part 6   33 min. - 1996 - Adults     Part 5 - Sacraments: Initiation In The Life of Christ      In this session, we first deal with the crucial question: "What is a sacrament?"  We look at Jesus as the primary sacrament, the true visible embodiment of the presence and power of God.  Then we discuss two sacraments of initiation: baptism and confirmation.  We also share an explanation of baptism and practical teaching tips in this session.  We look at confirmation as a sealing of baptism and a special celebration of the presence and power of the Spirit of the Lord, and we give special attention to preparation of the young for confirmation.  -Brennan Hill & William Madges
Part 6 - Sacraments: Jesus: Healer, Forgiver, Bread of Life   35 min. - 1996 - Adults   Here we discuss the sacraments of anointing, reconciliation, and Eucharist.  Once again we offer theological and practical catechetical insights on these sacraments.  We link the anointing of the sick to Jesus' healing ministry; and we explain the renewal in this area of healing.  We explain that reconciliation puts us in touch with the forgiving ministry of Jesus and we look at this sacrament in its renewed forms.  The discussion of the most central sacrament, Eucharist, is saved for last.  We discuss the real presence of the risen Lord, as well as how liturgy can be made the "summit and source" of life for students.  Finally, in this session we discuss preparation of the young for first reconciliation and first Eucharist.   -Brennan Hill & William Madges

C-9-06  THE LEGEND OF THE THREE TREES
A Classic Folktale             Children      DVD video 2008         22 minutes
THE LEGEND OF THE THREE TREES is a timeless retelling of the classic folktale of three distinct trees, each with its own hopes, dreams and aspirations.  We follow a beautiful olive tree blossoming in the valley, a knotty oak tree clinging to the shore, and a strong pine standing high on the mountainside.  They each dreamed of becoming great– perhaps a majestic treasure chest, or a magnificent sailing ship, or maybe the tallest tree in the forest.
But their dreams didn't seem to come true.  Disappointed and dejected, the trees despair about their existence until they each finally interact, each in their own unique ways, with Jesus Christ in his birth, ministry and ultimate sacrifice.  In these experiences, they learn that God has a special purpose for each of them in his kingdom.
Thoughtfully written and beautifully animated, THE LEGEND OF THE THREE TREES teaches children and adults the significance of their role in God's plan for the world. Two feature songs are included in the DVD.

Videos with values     Children of all ages, youth     DVD video 2008      11 minutes During a classroom exercise wherein Father Brendan guides young students in making a rosary out of string and beads, young Alex finds he just doesn't get what the rosary is all about.  Luckily for him our helpful angel appears to clear things up.  The rosary is all about major events in the life of Jesus, so the angel compares the mysteries to a photo album.  When it's made visual and Alex sees what the rosary represents, it all becomes real to him.  All four mysteries are presented and explained in age-appropriate language so that young audiences will understand that the rosary is a very special way to get in touch with Jesus and Mary.  Leader's Guide included.

S-3-34    BEATITUDES, OUR BLESSINGS    Twenty-third Publications      Youth and adults       DVD video 2008        42 minutes         The beatitudes from Matthew's Sermon on the Mount are central to the message of Jesus.  We have studied them down through the ages, but always as challenges for moral living, never as blessings or gifts.  Suppose Jesus meant exactly what he said, that each of us is a blessing, called to live out our particular gift in a way that enables us to be a blessing to the rest of the community.  In BEATITUDES, OUR BLESSINGS, Kathleen O'Connell Chesto invites us to look at the beatitudes in just this way.

NEW BOOKS 2005

Rel Bk 070   Full Time Christians   The Real Challenge from Vatican II          119 pages        Author William Droel posits a spirituality that is integral to the message of Vatican II, showing that it is in our everyday lives as Christians that the gospel message of Christ is fully realized.  He examines a spirituality of work through the lens of home, workplace, and neighbourhood, and states that the gospel message of Christ must be evident within each of these areas.  This is a book for all people who love and cherish the Christian faith and seek a way to more fully live the good news of Christ in the world.

Rel Bk 071   Traits of a Healthy Spirituality        131 pages                        Author, Sr. Melannie Svoboda, provides a reality check to help us determine how we live our faith today.  She defines and describes twenty specific indicators of a healthy spirituality.  These indicators: self-esteem, wonder, friendship, courage, teachability, tolerance, joy, interdependence, perseverence, freedom, love, generativity, balance, prayer, forgiveness, gratitude, playfulness, commitment, hope, restlessness, are "signs" rooted in everyday life, yet solidly based on scripture.  These "signs" help us to judge where we stand in terms of our Christian spirituality and how we can advance further on our journey of faith. .  It also provides meditations, reflection questions, and prayers to be used individually or for group sharing.

Rel Bk 072   Brave New Church - From Turmoil to Trust         119 pages   Author, Rev. William J. Bausch, knows about parish life in the Catholic Church firsthand, Here he focuses on twelve challenges facing the church today.  He then considers the transitions and responses that can move the Church forward as it seeks to minister to parishioners of the 21st century.  He uses solid historical background and strong Catholic principles.
