Mission Statement:

Evangelization is the cornerstone of all the activities of the Diocesan Office of Religious Education and relates to the missionary mandate of Jesus to "Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to all of creation".(Mk. 16: 15)

"The definitive aim of catechesis (the ministry of the catechist) is to put people not only in touch, but in communion and intimacy with Jesus Christ; only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity." (CT 45)

To enable the catechist to effectively transmit the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the name of the Church to those who seek Christ, it is essential that catechists be trained in the faith and participate in ongoing formation programs.(GDC 233-236) The five criteria of formation include, evangelize in present historical context, spiritual growth and witness to faith, content of faith integrated with meaning, understanding of humankind, and teaching methods proper to the catechetical process (GDC 237).

Basic background materials used include: Scripture, General Directory for Cathechesis (1997), Catechism of the Catholic Church and CCCB Catechetical Resources.

Associations:

The Diocesan office of of Religious Education is closely associated with the National Office of Religious Education (N.O.R.E.) of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). N.O.R.E. provides catechetical resources, program information and services. The Diocesan Office is a member of the Atlantic Catechetical Association , a leadership group of diocesan directors/coordinators in the Atlantic Church. The Association sponsors a biennial conference and plans other programs in cooperation with the Atlantic bishops, such as the Catechist Formation Initiative.
